Mad About Megan Draper

I feel like we waited years for the new season of Mad Men to start and now it’s over in a blink of an eye. Where did the time go?! With tonight’s season finale looming closer, I’ve found myself getting sad at the thought of not getting my weekly dose of Megan Draper.

Let’s face it, Megan Draper’s got it going on. First and foremost, she hates orange sherbet. You have to like her for this, if for no other reason. I mean really, who would settle for orange sherbet when you can have rainbow sherbet?

Speaking of her taste in food, have you noticed she always makes noodles for dinner and keeps the sauce on the side? As a big non-lover of sauce I greatly appreciate that. If there was one person whose dinner party I could attend, you could bet your last dollar it would be Megan Drapers.

She kicks major booty in her professional life, too. Her ladylike charm and smart business sense helped her to land the Heinz ketchup account during a pitch over dinner when Mr. Heinz ketchup himself was going to break-up with Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce. Unlike some other characters on the show, she doesn’t have to sleep with potential clients to land accounts, she’s all brains and guts. The best part? When she is successful at work she is humble.

Megan Draper is just cool. Her style is enviable. She’s elegant, intelligent, witty and classy without it seeming forced.  She takes the high road, stands up for what she believes and just makes me want to be like her. Or at least her best friend. Oh Megan Draper, please stay so awesome next season, too. I’m counting on you not to disappoint.

Oblivs Obsessions: Singing the Blues

The old saying goes “ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” Between the insanely cool weather, skipping the Radiohead concert for a much needed night in and H going out of town for a week, I’ve been mopping around singing the blues. Just when I was ready to throw in the towel and start a countdown to next Thursday, I embraced the idea of summer blues and found a few delights that perked me right back up.

Indy 500: Race Weekend Essentials

If you’ve looked at the weekend weather forecast then I’m willing to bet you’ve already started hydrating in anticipation of the projected 91 degree heat wave. I can’t imagine being in that heat all day and consuming a mass quantity of frothy goodness known as coors light, so it’s a good thing that’s a race day tradition I don’t participate in. It’s going to take a lot of water, breezy clothes and a lot of patience to stay positive about Sunday’s weather, but don’t worry race fans, I’ve got you covered.

It’s the Weekend, Make it Count

This weekend we were supposed to go to Indy to Mutt Strut. This weekend mother nature has vastly different weather plans than what we were hoping for:

So instead, a staycation it shall be. I’ve stocked up on healthy snacks, iTunes movie rentals and counting on H to bring the wine. Maybe Mother Nature knows exactly what she’s doing. A staycation before the busy month of May is probably just what I needed.

Speaking of the Month of May, it’s upon us in mere days and there’s no bigger focus on my mind than running. Hey, a girl’s got some party dresses to squeeze into. At any rate, this fitness focus has me obsessed with getting my hands on a Nike+ FuelBand. Or should I say getting a Nike+ FuelBand on my hand.

Not only does this little contraption track all daily activity (steps, calories burned, etc) it keeps track of your daily fitness goals, all the while it doubles as a bracelet and a watch. It’s like my ol’ Nike+ on crack, turned into an accessory.

That and there’s this inspiring video, too. Have a great weekend, make it count.

Oblivs Obesssions: Beating Winter Blues

Give me a sentence to vent here: There’s nothing worse than seeing photos of a former fling blissfully happy on facebook (I swear I’m quitting that website tomorrow…), not living alone (unless your roommate is a rad boyfriend, in which case I wouldn’t mind), and giving up all natural sugar after 2:00 pm daily (I wouldn’t cut my arm off for a bite of ice cream). Yep, that pretty much sums up my week.

The good news is, there are a ton of things in the world worse than any of that. Perspective is a beautiful thing, isn’t it? Even better is that moment of clarity when one can step back, look at all of their “problems” and genuinely laugh them off. And that’s just what I did. My friend, Leslie, offers even better insight to these “problems”, which I insist you read about right this instant.

Yeah, it’s officially the start of winter, but that is not excuse to get all bluesy. Go outside, close your eyes and take a nice, long, cold breath of fresh air. Let all your problems go when you exhale. No, seriously. Do it. And if that isn’t enough to send your blues a’packin’, one of my latest obsessions is sure to perk you right back up.

Joining Karl’s Kult

Ladies and Gentleman, I’ve officially joined a cult and they’ve gotten my puppy, too, I’m afraid. It all started in 1983 when I was born and Karl Lagerfeld joined fashion house extraordinaire, Chanel. Coincidence? I think not.

I’ve been fond of Lagerfeld’s designs and magical ability to reinvent not only himself, but the label’s he works with for several years. Even if you don’t know one thing about fashion, please know Uncle Karl (as I like to refer to his as) has such a mega impact on the fashion world, I’m willing to bet my archive of dresses and jewelry that you’re wearing one piece inspired by his masterful creations without even knowing it.

What does any this thing have to do with joining a cult? Well, our fashionable friends over at luxury retailer net-a-porter.com have launched a full fledge Karl Mania on their website, counting down the seconds until the unveiling of the Master’s latest collection. To join in the fun, all you have to do is join Karl’s Kult.

Net-a-porter is celebrating by giving away a grand prize of a weekend for two to Paris (!!!) plus $7500 to spend at net-a-porter.com. They are also showing a sneak peek of the collection and, my favorite, developed an app that allows you to get Karlified. Or in my case, to get Enzo Karlified.

Uncle Karl’s collection is said to debut on January 25th, exclusively at net-a-porter. It’s not too late to drink the kool-aid and join us.

The Golden Globes

Thank goodness award season is upon us. I made sure to have all my Sunday chores completed and perfected well before the red carpet started just to ensure I didn’t miss a step. Not only does award season give me film after film to watch before the Oscars, but it provides hours of entertainment perusing the gowns.

While I hold a soft spot in my heart for the Oscars, the Golden Globes are by far my favorite for gown watching. It’s like the Goldilocks of award shows: not too conservative, not too hoochie (I’m looking at you Grammys), it’s just right. And although the red carpet did not include Ryan Gosling, the gorgeous gowns more than made up for it.

Oblivs Obsessions: Stylishly Spooky & Spellbinding

Admittingly, I haven’t felt like celebrating much recently and I’m in need of a serious Halloween spirit attitude adjustment.  My usual gothic glam tendencies that my brother thinks border “Johnny Cash chic” historically shine during this time of year. Instead I’ve been sulking around in leggings and Vince sweaters, comatosed by my roommates and my weekly television rituals.

I woke up today deciding this was 1. extremely unhealthy and borderline depressing and 2. it was time to embrace broomsticks, black lipsticks, and black magic in search of my festive spirit of Halloween past. Did you know I’ve never repeated a costume in my entire life? Not once. So while I’m busy pouring all my energy into making a last-minute costume, carving pumpkins, watching Hocus Pocus and enjoying mulled wine I invite you to enjoy my current Halloween-inspired obsessions that are nothing less than practical magic.

[Candy Corn M&M's]
amazon.com, $9.49

I know, I know what is so stylish about M&M’s? Well, since I’m running late on the trendy candy bandwagon this year and since America’s favorite candy merged with my favorite fall candy, trying to get my hands on these was harder than one would think. And we all know exclusivity makes anything more chic. Instead of going to a few dozen stores in desperate search of these goodies, I recommend ordering them now and enjoying them post holiday.

[Tom Binns Tete De Mort Baguette & Skull Bracelet]
shopbop.com, $297

I’ve been lusting after this gem for weeks and I can’t think of a better excuse to purchase it than rekindling Halloween love. Think of it as a Valentine for Halloween, for those of us who love the darker side and sparkles equally.

[Joie Fanny Scalloped Lace Top in Caviar]
revolveclothing.com, $228

Black lace is everywhere in a big way this season. Perfect to pair back to leather leggings or your favorite broken-in skinny jeans, this top exudes a sexy black magicness with very little effort involved.

[Lanvin Cartwheel Wide-brimmed Rabbit Felt Hat]
net-a-porter.com, $1720

The thought of attempting a cartwheel frightens me. The thought of the perfect cartwheel hat sends a shock wave running through my blood. If you, like me, have been holding out for the perfect hat, look no further.

[Yves Saint Laurent Pure Lip Gloss - No. 49 Black (Limited Edition)]

While this particular lip gloss was on and off the shelves in a nano second circa 2008, with the help of google there are still some places selling their secret stash with prices ranging from $29 up to $70. Luckily I’ve kept mine tucked away in my lip gloss archive. When I bring it out I prefer to layer it over my trademark Armani lipstick in True Red.

Mixtape Monday: SpringTwentyTwelve

I know, I know, summer is barely past us and the excitement of sweaters and scarves is in the crisp autumn air. How could I possibly be thinking about next spring? New York Fashion Week, that’s how. I could (ahem –do) spend hours upon hours streaming shows, studying images and reading about all things Fashion Week.

My favorite thing, besides the beautiful clothes obviously, is the music that accompanies the shows. The music sets the mood for the collection and brings the clothes to life. In my opinion, there isn’t nearly enough emphasis on the music of fashion week, but I always manage to create a mixtape with the little information out there. Vanity Fair does a great job at keeping a rolling playlist during fashion week and non other than our favorite gals from WhoWhatWear always tweet great songs as they attend shows.

We might have to endure the freezing cold to get to next spring, but at least we have good beats to listen to in the meantime.

Spring/Summer TwentyTwelve
Sinister Kid – The Black Keys (Billy Reid)
Moth’s Wings – Passion Pit (Chris Benz)
I Can Change – LCD Soundsystem (Altuzarra)
She’s A Rainbow – The Rolling Stones (Timo Weiland)

Hand Me Down Your Love – Hot Chip (Michael Angel)
Je t’aime – Staff Benda Bilili (Lorick)
C’mere – Interpol (Jason Wu)
Will You Return – The Avett Brothers (Billy Reid)
I Need to Know – Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers (Billy Reid)
Sister – Vetiver (Billy Reid)

Oblivs Obsessions: Fall-ing in Love

The weather has finally started to chill and it’s time for transitional dressing. Usually I pull out my black skinny staples, but this year I decided to shake it up a bit when I laid eyes on J Brands latest and greatest, their cord skinnies. Ever since I first spotted them I knew it was love at first sight. Everything I’ve seen since I have paired back the glorious cords in my mind. Throw in a little dress and I’m almost all set for fall.
