In My Own Words: Lance Armstrong

Okay, let me set this straight from the get: I’m not writing today through rose-colored glasses with the imagination that Lance Armstrong is an exceptionally great man. I’m not trying to justify his behavior or actions or even trying to be sympathetic. My intention is to give my input on what I think has become a sort of media circus.

In life, we all get wronged by someone at some point one way or the another. We have all been lied to, deceived, disrespected and perhaps even bullied in some way or some how. I’m also willing to bet at one point we have all lied, been deceitful, disrespected someone and perhaps even bullied another person. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think it’s safe to say we all make mistakes. Sure, some are more severe than others, but my whole life I’ve been led to believe it’s a beautiful thing to learn from mistakes.

Back to Lance Armstrong. It seems that everyone in the world, on TV and twitter can’t stop bashing Lance Armstrong. Okay I get it. He doped and cheated and lied and deceived. For several years. He hurt an insurmountable amount of people who were friends, teammates and supporters.

So now Armstrong has reached out to Oprah to confess. In my opinion, it takes swallowing a big pill to be able to face the world and admit you’ve done horrible things and lied to everybody and their mothers about it. However, apparently for those who were wronged by him, the interview is not enough. Well folks, what would be enough? Is there a monetary amount that can make up for the hurt he caused you? Would you prefer a more blatant public apology, a detailed testimony under oath? In my experience, when you get hurt that bad nothing can make it right but time for healing.

Many people over various outlets have faulted Armstrong for the vagueness of his interview. Is it just me or, if someone is at the starting point of trying to make right as a result of his inexcusable actions and doesn’t speak about things because they may cause more hurt to someone, isn’t that a step in the right direction?

Another upsetting part of this whole charade are the people who celebrated and profited from Armstrong over the years. His teammates and sponsors that glorified his triumphs and wins, made millions upon millions of dollars because of his persona. The same people who for years have profited from Armstrong, then demanded he confess, have turned their backs and dismissed his revelation of truth.

I’m also still sitting here wondering how he is single-handedly responsible for all the blame when many others in the sport have doped, cheated and lied. Where is the outrage to hold them accountable? Pot, kettle, black?

And then there was Betsy Andreu’s appearance on Anderson Cooper 360 that really set me over the edge. After the interview she had this to say:

“He owed it to me. You owed it to me, Lance, and you dropped the ball. After what you’ve done to me and what you’ve done to my family, and you couldn’t own up to it?”

Uh, Betsy, were we watching the same interview? Not only did he own up to doping, cheating, lying, bullying and accepted the role as an overall villain in the sport of cycling, but he acknowledged what he did to you and your family as wrong. And I’m sorry, but who appointment you as the person that decides how many chances others have at telling the truth?

I get making an appearance to comment on the interview and give your input, but demanding an apology? Oh dear, I’m afraid no one owes anyone anything in this world. Have you gone this many years harboring that anger and waiting for an apology to make it better? Would you have felt just as wronged if this happened to you, your husband and family with someone who didn’t have the worldwide recognition such as Armstrong’s?

I’m not saying a Oprah interview makes everything better, I’m saying he admitted it and that’s a start. What Armstrong does or doesn’t do isn’t for any of us to judge or decide. Sure, he could have a hidden agenda for finally admitting to his wrong doings, but isn’t that really his prerogative?

As for the people who say it seems as though he has no regret, what good is regret? It doesn’t change things, it stiffens the ability to move forward.

He entertained us for year after year as a cancer survivor and athlete able to achieve the unthinkable. Armstrong was one of those mythical persons ESPN will do a modern-day version of a film documentary of in twenty years. His charitable contributions to fighting cancer and confession to Oprah doesn’t, and won’t, excuse his behavior, but he did the noble thing an told the truth. Albeit a few years and several hurt people later, but he did it.

At the end of the day it’s about forgiveness. You can forgive without forgetting. I won’t forget the actions that have brought Lance Armstrong to the point he’s confessing to Oprah. I won’t forget the string of summers huddled around a TV with my cousins rooting him on during the Tour de France or being proud to wear my yellow Livestrong bracelet when I first received it like it was the trophy of accessories. As a sports enthusiast and eternal optimist, I forgive him. And hopefully those who feel wronged by him can find peace and forgive him, too.

Indy 500: Pre-Race Traditions

My traditional night before the 500 usually consists of girl time with my best friend, Casie. We would cozy up on the couch of our hotel room, split a bottle of Oliver soft-red wine and snack on sundry shop goodies. Since this is usually the first time we get to see each other since the last race of the season, we have a ton to catch up on.

This year Casie won’t be in attendance and I’m not staying in Indy. Instead I’ll be at my house, cooking ahi tuna steaks (say a prayer), baking cupcakes for our friends in the Bell Helmet garage and enjoying a quite evening. I’ve tried my hand at attempting to replicate H’s favorite olive spread (using this recipe), which I’m hoping to surprise him with.

I won’t go to the traditional race day breakfast with my mom, but instead enjoy Clabber Girl biscuits and gravy with Drama, a tradition we started with each other last year.

I’ll make sure to try to remember every single pre race moment from H’s first Indy 500. I’ll say a prayer with my brother and dad before they go up to the spotters stand, a tradition we follow at USC games, but will just be implementing as a family here this year. My arm will be full with bracelets I wear to remember my friend. I’ll have the best bloody mary in the world.

Some things will stay the same. Like the balloons floating into the air just before the command to fire engines. And thirty-three cars lining up, hoping to find their way to the yard of bricks first and become an instant legend. A wreath adorned with lilly’s and red, white and blue ribbon waiting to be worn. And milk being drank so sweetly on a hot spring day after another 500 miles are in the books.

Not every year is going to be a great as the year before, but every year will provide us with the thrills and pains only the greatest spectacle in racing can. Enjoy your day. Cherish every special moment. We have to wait 365 more before we get another one, so we better make the most of what we get on this magical day.

Happy Indy 500.

Indy 500: Race Weekend Essentials

If you’ve looked at the weekend weather forecast then I’m willing to bet you’ve already started hydrating in anticipation of the projected 91 degree heat wave. I can’t imagine being in that heat all day and consuming a mass quantity of frothy goodness known as coors light, so it’s a good thing that’s a race day tradition I don’t participate in. It’s going to take a lot of water, breezy clothes and a lot of patience to stay positive about Sunday’s weather, but don’t worry race fans, I’ve got you covered.

Indy 500: Time Trials Recap

I’m not sure if it’s a natural let down coming from last year’s 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 and the magic that surrounded it or this years circumstances, but time trials proved to be less than exciting for me. Then again, maybe that’s just the sleepy onslaught from the Benadryl I consumed to battle my over-the-top allergies. Either way, the weekend was rather low-key and uneventful.

With the lack of bumping or normal time trial excitement, the laid back weekend was a great opportunity to unwind with old friends and family, enjoy basking in the warm hot sun and several meals from my favorite local restaurants.

Back home again…

Mug-n-Bun, a Hoosier staple.

Helio’s Race Day helmet in progress.

The Fast 9.

Enjoying the sunshine and practice.

Feasting on my favorite Mexican delights.

Bump Day breakfast of champions.

Great memories from last year.

Real life Bob Ross-esque trees at IMS.

A magic volcano to end the weekend.

Fluffy Ferrari had the most exciting weekend, escaping his baby gate confines twice. Do they have rock walls for puppies? Enzo would be a pro! He was absolutely exhausted when we got home and thrilled to finally get to snuggle up on our Missoni blanket that my dad kindly brought to us from Florida.

With the greatest spectacle in racing less than a week away, I can only hope the week-long race festivities create an avalanche of excitement and anticipation. Who is your favorite to win on Sunday?

Happy May

It’s May. The month we’ve all been waiting for. The excitement, traditions, friends and family meet for the greatest spectacle in racing. The Indianapolis 500. At the end of last May I kind of knew a month like that would be hard to top, but I never imagined it would be hard to welcome this year.

Since childhood this magical time has brightened up my spirit and holds a special place in my heart so this year I’m going in big with no expectations, just gratefulness I get to be a part of something so magical. No expectations means no chance of disappointment and  no disappointment sounds perfect to me. Stay tuned all month for exciting updates and tales of adventure, but most importantly embrace the spirit of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Enjoy May. We never know when it may be our last…

It’s the Weekend, Make it Count

This weekend we were supposed to go to Indy to Mutt Strut. This weekend mother nature has vastly different weather plans than what we were hoping for:

So instead, a staycation it shall be. I’ve stocked up on healthy snacks, iTunes movie rentals and counting on H to bring the wine. Maybe Mother Nature knows exactly what she’s doing. A staycation before the busy month of May is probably just what I needed.

Speaking of the Month of May, it’s upon us in mere days and there’s no bigger focus on my mind than running. Hey, a girl’s got some party dresses to squeeze into. At any rate, this fitness focus has me obsessed with getting my hands on a Nike+ FuelBand. Or should I say getting a Nike+ FuelBand on my hand.

Not only does this little contraption track all daily activity (steps, calories burned, etc) it keeps track of your daily fitness goals, all the while it doubles as a bracelet and a watch. It’s like my ol’ Nike+ on crack, turned into an accessory.

That and there’s this inspiring video, too. Have a great weekend, make it count.

Where There’s Smoke…

One crisp February Sunday, several years ago, I threw an impromptu Daytona 500 party at my parents house. Our family friends came over, we played games, sipped cocktails (several) and the dogs enjoyed a smorgasbord of dropped hor dourves. It was a pretty great day. The only thing that put a damper on it was the fact that I couldn’t find a Tony Stewart t-shirt anywhere in central Indiana to wear for the big day.

The quest for a Smoke shirt started early morning Saturday and went well into the afternoon. I went to the IMS gift shop, Meijer and a handful of Dicks and nothing. You mean to tell me that nowhere in greater Indianapolis could I find a shirt to wear that celebrated one of Indiana’s finest?! I was going to have to take matters into my own hands. I needed to create something fast, easy to wear and full of Tony Stewart spirit…and then my famous paper plate necklaces were born.

Why yes, I would perform a google image search of Tony Stewart, print my favorite photos off, cut them out and paste them onto a paper plate. Attach a piece of multi-color yarn to each end and the best accessory ever invented became a reality.

Armed with my paper plate necklace and a diet Coors, I was ready to witness Smoke win his first Daytona 500. Several more diet beverages, celery snacks and whiskey shots later and my mom was begging me to lower my voice while screaming at the television. Our Daytona 500 viewing party had turned into the Oblivia cheering on Tony Stewart attempting to win the Daytona 500 viewing party. As I’m sure you know, in the end Smoke didn’t win and I ended up sulking like a five-year old.

What can I say, my temper tantrums were epic back then.

Every year since I’ve parked my behind in front of the television to watch one of only a handful of Cup races I can stomach in a season, in hopes Smoke would make it happen. And every year since then it hasn’t happened. Well I’ll tell you what, I woke up this morning with a good feeling and a smile on my face. Today is the day. Go get ‘em, Smoke. Light Daytona on fire and bring home a victory.
