Oblivs Obsessions: Singing the Blues

The old saying goes “ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” Between the insanely cool weather, skipping the Radiohead concert for a much needed night in and H going out of town for a week, I’ve been mopping around singing the blues. Just when I was ready to throw in the towel and start a countdown to next Thursday, I embraced the idea of summer blues and found a few delights that perked me right back up.

Indy 500: Race Weekend Essentials

If you’ve looked at the weekend weather forecast then I’m willing to bet you’ve already started hydrating in anticipation of the projected 91 degree heat wave. I can’t imagine being in that heat all day and consuming a mass quantity of frothy goodness known as coors light, so it’s a good thing that’s a race day tradition I don’t participate in. It’s going to take a lot of water, breezy clothes and a lot of patience to stay positive about Sunday’s weather, but don’t worry race fans, I’ve got you covered.

Oblivs Obsessions: Coming Up Roses

The spectrum of colors in which roses can be found has long interested me. I love how bright and pure the colors of these particular flowers are. The gradation from pastel to brilliant is especially noteworthy and awe inspiring.

For me, this spring roses have proven to be the number one inspiration when shopping for new beauty products. Color, scent and dewey glow is what I was looking for and these are the products I found to fit the inspiration.

1. Tokyomilk/Dark body wash in Yesterday
2. NARS bronzer in Laguna
3. Chanel nail colors in Distraction and Tentation
4. NARS blush in Gaiety
5. LaMer moisturizing gel creme
6. NARS velvet gloss lip pencil in Mexican Rose

Oblivs Obesssions: Beating Winter Blues

Give me a sentence to vent here: There’s nothing worse than seeing photos of a former fling blissfully happy on facebook (I swear I’m quitting that website tomorrow…), not living alone (unless your roommate is a rad boyfriend, in which case I wouldn’t mind), and giving up all natural sugar after 2:00 pm daily (I wouldn’t cut my arm off for a bite of ice cream). Yep, that pretty much sums up my week.

The good news is, there are a ton of things in the world worse than any of that. Perspective is a beautiful thing, isn’t it? Even better is that moment of clarity when one can step back, look at all of their “problems” and genuinely laugh them off. And that’s just what I did. My friend, Leslie, offers even better insight to these “problems”, which I insist you read about right this instant.

Yeah, it’s officially the start of winter, but that is not excuse to get all bluesy. Go outside, close your eyes and take a nice, long, cold breath of fresh air. Let all your problems go when you exhale. No, seriously. Do it. And if that isn’t enough to send your blues a’packin’, one of my latest obsessions is sure to perk you right back up.

Oblivs Obsessions: Holiday Wish List

I can’t remember the last time I sat down and made a Christmas list. The one thing I do remember is that the internet did not yet exist and my wish list was mostly comprised of photos cut out from various catalogs. In my family gift giving is less about what the gift is and more about what it means.

With that said, there’s nothing I’m looking more forward to than seeing my family a week from today. And if Santa was going to pay us a visit, I wouldn’t mind having my hello kitty stocking stuffed with these delights.

Oh, and Santa, if you wanted to add the ESPN 30 For 30 DVD set  (that is on sale!) that would be so sweet!

Oblivs Obsessions: Candy Cane

Let me just give it to you straight: the way to my heart is through candy canes. Any and everything candy caned. Patterns on fabrics, food products, I even have a piece of jewelry with candy cane on it. Don’t judge – I ordered it by myself via the Avon catalog when I was seven and it’s still chic as hell.

I believe the start of this candy cane obsession came when my college roommate, Aly, and I were ravenously hungry one afternoon when we stumbled upon Jack-in-the-Box. There was a massive window decal with a photo of candy cane milkshake. One look at that sucker and I knew what I was ordering. Can you imagine anything better than a candy cane milkshake in the middle of Phoenix during Christmas?!

This may sound excessive and borderline decadent, but Trader Joe’s happens to have the trifecta of candy cane treats (all highlighted below).  You remember that scene in the Holiday where Cameron Diaz is throwing stuff in her cart and chugging wine? That’s me at Trader Joes. Okay, I wish I could chug wine while shopping. Anywhere. But that’s besides the point.

Not to be confused with peppermint, candy cane is where it’s at. I don’t want a peppermint latte from that terrible coffee place based in Seattle or peppermint bark (c’mon, who wants to eat anything with the word bark in the description?) or light a peppermint candle. Peppermint just isn’t as magical as candy cane.

Oblivs Obessions: Puppy Preparation

It’s been a long, exhausting week. Between dealing with the domain hijacking of 2011 and my real job, I’ve also been preparing for my new puppy, Enzo. Enzo Esteban Lionheart Sanchez to be exact. While I know there is much more to raising a puppy than accessories, they are just such a fun part of the process I had to share my favorites.

Note: oblivialand.com will be back to normal next week, as the people who purchased the domain have agreed to sell it back to me. Hooray! Talk about and early Christmas present.

Jonathan Adler Puppy Uppers Canister
jonathanadler.com, $138
One of my favorite things in my kitchen are my Jonathan Adler vice canisters that hold my gluten-free baking products (Peyote) and brown sugar (Ganga). I was beside myself to find a matching one to store dog treats.

USC Trojans Cardinal Adjustable Pet Collar
usctrojans.com, $11.95
When it was time to get a collar, it wasn’t even a question that I wanted a USC one for my pup. A subtle way to show team spirit and keep him properly tagged and comfortable.

Cuddler Bed
petco.com, $13.99
I have big plans for Enzo cuddling with me in my bed every night, but during the day baby boy needs a place to snug up. For starters the name is the cuddler bed. If that weren’t enough to seal the deal, this particular bed has received a 4.5 paw review. I can’t help but think if I were a dog I would love this cozy little bed. Who am I kidding, I’m a human and I would love this cozy little bed.

Kiehl’s Cuddly-Coat Dog Grooming Shampoo
Nordstrom, $17.00
One look at my little fluff baby and I knew his grooming and upkeep was going to be extremely important. Besides the fact the subtle lavender scent of this shampoo is absolutely amazing, it’s soap free, blending chamomile flower extract with other cleansing ingredients that promises to keep dogs cuddly.

Foie Gras Dog Biscuits
Bouchon Bakery, $7 for a bag of four
Until I find out Ladurée makes puppy macarons these foie gras and chicken stock enriched dog treats will have to make do for little Enzo. I can’t imagine any dog wouldn’t like Bouchon treats, there is not one thing in the entire bakery of human treats that aren’t simply divine.

Oblivs Obsessions: Stylishly Spooky & Spellbinding

Admittingly, I haven’t felt like celebrating much recently and I’m in need of a serious Halloween spirit attitude adjustment.  My usual gothic glam tendencies that my brother thinks border “Johnny Cash chic” historically shine during this time of year. Instead I’ve been sulking around in leggings and Vince sweaters, comatosed by my roommates and my weekly television rituals.

I woke up today deciding this was 1. extremely unhealthy and borderline depressing and 2. it was time to embrace broomsticks, black lipsticks, and black magic in search of my festive spirit of Halloween past. Did you know I’ve never repeated a costume in my entire life? Not once. So while I’m busy pouring all my energy into making a last-minute costume, carving pumpkins, watching Hocus Pocus and enjoying mulled wine I invite you to enjoy my current Halloween-inspired obsessions that are nothing less than practical magic.

[Candy Corn M&M's]
amazon.com, $9.49

I know, I know what is so stylish about M&M’s? Well, since I’m running late on the trendy candy bandwagon this year and since America’s favorite candy merged with my favorite fall candy, trying to get my hands on these was harder than one would think. And we all know exclusivity makes anything more chic. Instead of going to a few dozen stores in desperate search of these goodies, I recommend ordering them now and enjoying them post holiday.

[Tom Binns Tete De Mort Baguette & Skull Bracelet]
shopbop.com, $297

I’ve been lusting after this gem for weeks and I can’t think of a better excuse to purchase it than rekindling Halloween love. Think of it as a Valentine for Halloween, for those of us who love the darker side and sparkles equally.

[Joie Fanny Scalloped Lace Top in Caviar]
revolveclothing.com, $228

Black lace is everywhere in a big way this season. Perfect to pair back to leather leggings or your favorite broken-in skinny jeans, this top exudes a sexy black magicness with very little effort involved.

[Lanvin Cartwheel Wide-brimmed Rabbit Felt Hat]
net-a-porter.com, $1720

The thought of attempting a cartwheel frightens me. The thought of the perfect cartwheel hat sends a shock wave running through my blood. If you, like me, have been holding out for the perfect hat, look no further.

[Yves Saint Laurent Pure Lip Gloss - No. 49 Black (Limited Edition)]

While this particular lip gloss was on and off the shelves in a nano second circa 2008, with the help of google there are still some places selling their secret stash with prices ranging from $29 up to $70. Luckily I’ve kept mine tucked away in my lip gloss archive. When I bring it out I prefer to layer it over my trademark Armani lipstick in True Red.

Oblivs Obsessions: Fall-ing in Love

The weather has finally started to chill and it’s time for transitional dressing. Usually I pull out my black skinny staples, but this year I decided to shake it up a bit when I laid eyes on J Brands latest and greatest, their cord skinnies. Ever since I first spotted them I knew it was love at first sight. Everything I’ve seen since I have paired back the glorious cords in my mind. Throw in a little dress and I’m almost all set for fall.

Oblivs Obsessions: Baggage…the Good Kind

Let me start by stating that although I might be an easy sell when it comes to premium  denim and shirts I can wear as dresses, I am very picky about selecting bags. When I find a bag I love, I usually wear it until it starts to resemble a vintage version of itself. If you’ve ever seen my tan Kooba you know what I’m talking about. For whatever reason, this week fabulous bags were popping up everywhere I turned. I thought why not embrace this and surrender to all the baggage?
